IoT traffic generation and analysis of the VARIoT project discussed at the French-Japanese Intermediate Workshop on Cybersecurity

On November 4th, 2019, Gregory Blanc (IMT/Télécom SudParis) attended the French-Japanese Intermediate Workshop on Cybersecurity (https://project.inria.fr/FranceJapanICST/cybersecurity-cooperation-between-france-and-japan-intermediate-workshop-november-4th-and-5th-leti-grenoble-france/) at Grenoble, France.
The workshop was hosted by CEA LETI, a technology research institute, which hosts several platforms including a smart home.
A presentation on the VARIoT project, and in particular Activity 4 on IoT traffic generation and analysis was performed in front of an audience of 20 people mixing French and Japanese researchers both from academia, the industry, as well as governmental agencies.
The feedback from Japanese attendees was very positive as they are also pursuing similar goals to VARIoT project, namely scanning the Internet for vulnerable IoT devices, or sandboxing IoT malware for observing how such malware behave. Contacts were established for further collaboration, which will involve exchanging datasets of IoT traffic and malware, as well as IoT vulnerabilities’ information.
Cybersecurity France-Japan is an initiative from the Science and Technology bureau of the French Embassy in Japan. It holds yearly symposia for researchers to collaborate in several working groups covering a large scope of the cybersecurity research in both countries.
